For those of you who regularly read my blog you will already know that I try to keep my recipes simple. I aim to use only ingredients that are easy to find (as far as possible), techniques that do not require a chef qualification and no fancy equipment.
However…I was recently asked to put an Omniblend V blender through its paces…and I have to say, I am in love!
It wasn’t love at first sight, after all these high-powered blender things are not kind on the eyes, nor are they quiet when in use! They are, however, remarkably useful machines for making all manner of things from nut milks (no more unnatural thickeners or gums – just nuts and milk) and butters to pancake batter; smoothies to soups.
And this one really is a champ because not only does it blend, but due to its high power it also heats (in a BPA-free jug)! So by bunging a few vegetables, some stock and whatever else takes your fancy into the jug and leaving it on high power for 4 or 5 minutes, you have beautiful creamy hot soup, with easy to absorb nutrients since the powerful blender breaks down the cell walls of the ingredients making it easier for your body to absorb all the goodies! Cool eh? Especially if you are on a healing diet like I am!
The kids are a big fan…they have enjoyed breakfast smoothies and after dinner fruit ‘ice cream’. By adding frozen bananas to the jug with a dollop of nut butter, dairy-free milk and whatever other flavours take your fancy you have a delicious smooth ice cream in the time it takes you to get the bowls out of the cupboard! Equally, use any frozen fruit of choice to make soft, delicate, healthy ice cream. Amazing!
In addition, I have been whizzing up whole almonds to make ground almonds (much cheaper than buying them already ground), obliterating seeds to make seed flour, whipping up dips in a matter of seconds, making sauces for pasta (including wild garlic pesto), creating smooth vegan cheesecake toppings and the icing for my recent birthday cake…indeed it gets used at least once a day, and will certainly get used more when my diet opens out a bit.
Now, having never tried out a Vitamix (which incidentally has been on my wish list for a very long time!), I cannot say whether this machine matches up.
Having seen Vitamix’s in demo’s I suspect that is doesn’t quite. Sometimes there are a few lumps in the ice cream (much to the kids disgust!) and if there are not enough nuts in the jug it is pretty difficult to make nut butter (but who wants tonnes and tonnes of nut butter at a time?!) and the icing I made for my cake wasn’t quite as smooth as I had hoped.
Having said that, one of these will set you back a mere £250 (and it comes with a whopping 7 year guarantee), compared to £600 for the equivalent C series Vitamix! I am not sure that the Vitamix is that much better…at least I wouldn’t be able to justify that difference in price!
For what I need it for for the Omniblend is superb.
If you want to know more then I found this video really useful…although I have to say that when making almond milk you need to use the supplied nut bag to strain out the bits (unlike in the video)…I use them in my breakfast pancakes and just reduce the amount of almond milk I add to the batter.
