OK, so I don’t know about you, but I am always on the hunt for great fish and chips!
For those of you who regularly read my ramblings you will remember me writing about the time my daughter had what we thought would be her last fish and chips before going on her life-long gluten-free diet to treat her coeliac disease.
At the time we thought that would be it. No more fish and chips for any of us (because if she can’t have something then nor will we).
How wrong we were! Firstly, we found that Rick Stein’s fish and chip shop in Padstow offered gluten-free fish and chips. I wrote about that here. That was an exciting discovery and one that we rejoiced in when we were on holiday in Cornwall.
Then we found that Darts Farm, just outside Exeter, fried their chips in a separate fryer and could grill fish thus enabling us to eat there too!
And then, a truly fantastic thing happened! Greendale Farmshop, even closer to us than Darts Farm, started to offer gluten-free fish and chips on the first Wednesday of every month!!! And not only that, everything they offer on that first Wednesday, all day long, is gluten-free!!! So, gluten-free battered sausages (made by their very own butchers and AMAZING!), gluten-free fish cakes and gluten-free pies as well as beautifully fresh battered fish! All is fabulous! The batter is crisp and light, the chips perfectly cooked with those special crispy bits you can only get from ‘proper’ deep fried chips (and that the kids always let me have because they know I love them so much!!)…my mouth is watering!
To top it all off, while you wait for your meal, you get to browse the phenomenal selection of gluten-free goodies that Greendale Farmshop sells…pretty much all of it unobtainable in the supermarkets. You can even buy your pudding there!!
So mark the date in your diary…it is firmly marked in ours. The first Wednesday in every month is eagerly anticipated in this household! Everyone is looking forward to tomorrow!
Although I received a free meal from Greendale this in no way influenced my review. I am always honest and provide reviews that are based on my experience.
