Do you ever look in the mirror and wonder how that happened, or is it just me? I am sure it isn’t just me!
Recently when I look in the mirror, I see crinkles that weren’t there before, many grey hairs poking through the supposed ‘permanent’ hair colour, and far too many spots! I also get that little niggly voice telling me that I am good for nothing!
As I approach ‘middle age’ things seem to be going to pot, and not in a good way!
It was with great relief that at Mumsnet Blogfest this weekend, I discovered that I am not alone in worrying about such things…along with worrying whether people will like me, read my stuff, think what I write it rubbish etc etc!
Even famous people like Jon Ronson and Nick Hornby worry about whether their writing is any good??!! And Elain Miller (A.K.A Gussie Grips), hilarious and talented comedienne, even confessed to “absolutely sh**ing myself” whilst participating on the ‘How to Find Your Funny’ panel discussion.
All of this I found particularly refreshing!
If I only came away with one thing from the conference it was to realise that I am as ‘normal’ as the next person. Francesca Martinez put it far more eloquently in her fabulous 5 minute ‘think bomb’.
In fact, I came away with a lot more than that! I got to catch up with Mel over at Le Coin De Mel one of my favourite bloggers, and I picked up a few tips on how to promote my You Tube channel better. I also came away with a lovely goodie bag with some much-needed face products to help disguise the ‘wrinkly middle-aged’ girl (I can’t think of myself as a woman quite yet!!!) that I am becoming!
As I have got older I have been much more careful about what I put on my face and only really like to use products that are ‘natural’. Now, that is pretty tricky and it has meant that my normal preference for moisturiser is organic unrefined coconut oil, such as this Biona one.
This might sound like I walk around with an oil slick on my face, but in actual fact it is absorbed into your skin really easily (provided you don’t apply too much!) and has many benefits such as being anti-bacterial (please get rid of those spots!), being a good make-up remover and preventing ageing (due to the vitamin E in it).
Having said that I do like to try other products and was delighted when my Blogfest goodie bag contained some Body Shop vitamin E oil and some Aromatics Ltd frankincense and Rose face cream. Along with my new Neals Yard ‘Rejuvenating frankincense’ refining cleanser I should be ship-shape in no time, and smelling like Christmas! With any luck those blasted wrinkles might just iron themselves out (ha ha).
Most importantly I came away with a little more self-belief.
I am doing OK in this blogging lark! It is great to get together with some like-minded souls to help you feel a little more ‘normal’.
However, I did leave wishing that I could be funny; with so many funny people in one space, I do long to have that particular talent!
What do you long for?! Firmer skin or the ability to make people laugh?!
