I haven’t cheated. I still have fingernails and I think I am still sane!
It is day three of the I Quit Sugar 8 week programme and I think I am fairing pretty well considering!
Last time I gave up sugar was at the end of the summer when I put myself on the GAPS diet in a bid to rid myself of my ongoing tummy troubles put down to IBS many moons ago. I managed almost three months sugar free that time, but inevitably ended up back on the sweet stuff (albeit less) and still getting sugar cravings.
I put a lot of that down to the fact that the GAPS diet removes most carbohydrate as well as sugar (you only get carbohydrates from vegetables). Looking back now I realise that my body needs fuel in the form of carbohydrate and by removing it, along with sugar, I just crave it all the time.
This time is different. I am following the well organised and supported I Quit Sugar programme run by Sarah Wilson. All she expects is that you cut down sugar in week one, remove all sugar (including fruit) for four weeks of the programme and then add in a little low fructose sweeteners towards the end of the programme. You are, however, allowed carbohydrates in the forms of healthy things like wholegrain sourdough bread, quinoa and sweet potatoes (she encourages unprocessed food all the way).
It all feels far more achievable!
In fact I am super impressed so far because I feel like I am on a little holiday! At the weekend I was emailed my meal plan for the week, along with a shopping list! For me, not having to think about what I am going to feed everyone and what I need to buy is wonderful! Having someone do all that for you is amazing. And if you don’t like something on the plan you can just find a different recipe to cook (provided it is healthy and doesn’t contain hidden sugar!). For example, this morning I really didn’t want what was suggested for breakfast so I just had pancakes with the rest of the family (with nut butter in case you wanted to know!).
I have also decided to quit the low FODMAP diet. It was doing nothing for me, so although I am being cautious about re-introducing the high FODMAP foods I am going for it slowly!
I said to Mr M yesterday that we may well be following the meal plans every 8 weeks for ever because I am so happy for someone else to do the thinking! It gives me more brain space to create new things to share on here!
So, so far so good! I’m not hungry. I’m not grumpy (like I was last time!!) and I feel like I can do it!
I’ll give you another update next week but fingers crossed it will be as positive as this one!
I’d love to hear from you if you are doing the programme too…or have done it in the past, or have quit sugar all on your own.
I am not being paid to complete the programme but have been offered to join it for free. I also receive commission should anyone join it on my recommendation. This will not affect my verdict of it because I am always honest in my opinions.
