OK so I’m going to be controversial in this post. I’m on holiday for half term so I’ll be posting this when rotten tomatoes can’t be thrown at me!
I’m afraid I feel the need to vent my frustration about something that has annoyed me for a long time. I hope I don’t alienate too many of you by writing about it…
Yes, an innocent little word and one that shouldn’t elicit any kind of response really.
Apart from by me.
To be more specific…blog awards.
Ever since I started blogging there have been awards for bloggers.
Now I think my problem with these awards stems from my childhood so bear with me…
I was not a popular child.
I was a square. The one that wasn’t any good at sport and never got picked for teams until I was the only one left.
It’s clearly left me mentally scarred because I equate these blog awards to the same thing.
Those that win awards are those that have a lot of friends and aren’t shy about asking them to vote for them.
See that’s where my problem lies.
Asking people to vote for them.
These awards are not dished out to the blogs whose content is the best, or whose authors have worked the hardest, or whose recipes actually work…they are dished out to the blogs whose authors are popular.
There, I’ve said it. They’re popularity contests.
You nominate yourself for an award and then ask people to vote for you. Kinda weird eh?
This year I’ve been nominated for two awards…but it means nothing because the awards are not independently judged. The only way I would win is if I spent a lot of time asking for your votes (which I’m not going to do for reasons outlined above).
Perhaps one day there will be some awards that are independently judged but until that time, you won’t see me displaying any logos proudly declaring that I have won this or that award.
I’ll just be proud in the knowledge that over 22,000 people visited my site last month creating over 1 million hits. And best of all, I hear from many of you about your baking successes and it makes me very happy to be making a little difference to a handful of people’s lives :).
